Skin health. Biohacking through routines & rituals

Alot of people do not know the fact that I am a nerd on what wellbeing and biohacking can do to how we experience life.

Alchemy for the skin
Biohacking the skin health through routine and rituals

For more than 20 years, I’ve been exploring, experimenting, and crafting rituals (which are now routines) to elevate the way I live my life. Skin health is way more than vanity. It’s the most accurate reflection of how the body is inside, and how our nervous system is reacting to life.

And therefore, I came up with essentials that made a huge difference for my personal health journey. A blend of herbalism, alchemy, superfoods, and good habits:

Morning / evening practices (rituals)

1. Face Cold Plunges Every morning, I start my day with a refreshing face cold plunge. This simple yet powerful hack involves submerging my face in a bowl of ice water for about 10-15 seconds. It instantly wakes me up, tightens my pores, and reduces puffiness. Plus, it activates the parasympathetic nervous system, helping me feel calm and centered.

2. Vitamin C Vitamin C is a must for its antioxidant properties. It protects my skin from free radicals and boosts collagen production. I apply a Vitamin C serum right after niacinamide to brighten my complexion and even out my skin tone. This is the first thing I apply right after washing my face at night. It does wonders helping the skin absorb any other serum applied afterwards.

3. Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) Niacinamide is a game-changer in my skincare routine. This form of Vitamin B3 helps to reduce inflammation, improve skin elasticity, and enhance the skin barrier. I use a niacinamide serum every morning to keep my skin smooth, hydrated, and glowing. I apply this at night as well, after the vitamin C drops are absorbed.

4. Butter. Yes, you read that right! Incorporating butter into my diet has been a delightful discovery. The healthy fats in this liquid gold help to retain moisture in the skin, keeping it hydrated and glowing. I love adding a small amount of grass-fed butter or ghee to my morning coffee.

5. Moringa . This leaf is a powerhouse of nutrients. Rich in vitamins A, C, and E, it supports skin health from the inside out. I often add moringa powder to my matcha or take it as a supplement to boost my overall wellness: energy levels, clearing skin, better digestion, and glowing hair.

6. Castor Oil. My to go-to favorite for healing. I discovered it this year, simply love it. I use it as an overnight treatment, applying a thin layer to my face as well as on the liver area (yes a bit messy but worth the whole stickiness) before bed. This natural, reasonably priced gem helps to reduce inflammation, fight skin problems, and promote a smooth, supple complexion.

7. Turmeric. I grew up with turmeric on almost everything (tea, smoothies, cooked vegetables, dog supplements)... At this point of my life, I incorporated it as part of my skincare. Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties help to brighten the skin, fade dark spots, and boost the immune system. How to use it? I often make a turmeric face mask by mixing turmeric powder with honey and yogurt, applying it for 10-15 minutes before rinsing off. Additionally, I add turmeric to my diet through golden milk.

Lifestyle refinement

8. Sleep quality. Never underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep. Quality sleep is crucial for skin regeneration and overall health. I ensure I get at least 7-8 hours of restful sleep by maintaining a consistent bedtime routine and creating a calming sleep environment.

9. Healthy relationships. Healthy skin isn’t just about what you put on your face or in your body; it’s also about the relationships you nurture. Surrounding myself with positive, supportive people and most importantly, removing myself from draining or toxic environments / people; has had a profound impact on my mental and emotional well-being, which in turn reflects on my skin.

10. Conscious movement. Practicing yoga and conscious movement that actually feels good on the body (we don't do "no pain- no gain" anymore) has been one of the most powerful tools to get back into the present moment, and from there listen to what the body & mind need. And therefore, react differently to the daily stress of life.
